Your Guide to Maintaining Your HVAC for the Month of August

Maintaining your HVAC system is something that should be done every month. After all, HVAC maintenance is essential to keeping your home comfortable and lowering your monthly heating and cooling bills. With that in mind, you should always be sure to take good care of it. Otherwise, you’ll pay for it in the long run.

In this post, HVAC installation services provider WM Buffington Company gives you a step-by-step guide to maintaining your HVAC system for the month of August.

Step #1: Air Filters

The first thing you should do when maintaining your HVAC system is to check the air filter. After all, by now it's seen a period of heavy cooling use, meaning it’s possible that the filters are full of contaminants. It's quite possible that you'll have to replace these filters sooner than the recommended three month mark, so have a replacement on hand just in case.

Step #2: Registers

The next thing that you should do is inspect the registers and return air grilles in your home to ensure that they haven’t been blocked or shut. Otherwise, the airflow through your HVAC systems will be restricted, which can result in performance issues and overheating. Move all furniture away from the vents as well.

Step #3: Exterior Cooling Equipment

The third step to take is to inspect your exterior cooling equipment. Remove grass clippings and debris that may have gathered on the unit, and trim away any vegetation that's grown around it. Avoid placing outdoor furniture or other items close to the unit as well. If you’re unsure about inspecting your HVAC system yourself, you can always approach the HVAC contractors at WM Buffington Company to get the job done.

Step #4: Drip Pans and Drain Lines

Finally, you need to inspect your cooling system’s drip pans and drain lines for any possible clogs. If mold or algae has managed to grow in these components, the condensation from the cooling process may not be able to properly exit your home, which could cause the cooling system to malfunction. To remove clogs and condensate from the drain lines, simply turn off the power and use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the water from the drip pan. Clean the pan with mild soap afterwards, and your cooling system should be as good as new.
